The Ubbelohde capillary viscometer

The Ubbelohde capillary viscometer is a standardized test device in which a fixed test quantity of oil flows through a standardized capillary. The flow time required for this is a measure of the kinematic viscosity.

The Ubbelohde viscometer is characterized by high measuring accuracy due to the suspended sphere level, which compensates for the acting surface tensions.

Characteristics
Measuring range 0.35 to 50,000 mm²/s (with different capillaries)
Measurement accuracy +/- 0,5%
Filling quantity approx. 15 ml
Flow time > 200 s
Temperature range 25 to 100° C (above with special bath fluids)
Possible tests
  • DIN 51 562, ASTM D 2515: Measurement of the kinematic viscosity of Newtonian fluids
  • DIN 53 722: Determination of the viscosity number of polyamides in dilute solution
  • DIN EN ISO 3104 (1999-12): Determination of kinematic viscosity and calculation of dynamic viscosity
